Measuring Swing-Top Stopper Opening and Closing Forces with the STS-1
On a swing-top bottle, two forces define how the mechanical stopper behaves: the force needed to open it and the force needed to close it again. The STS-1 by AT2E measures both with a single instrument. Two precision force gauges and a semi-automatic, constant-speed test cycle deliver highly repeatable results on bottles of different heights.
How the STS-1 test works
Place the bottle in the clamp, adjust the closure, then tighten the clamp.
Opening test: move the pneumatic valve to the opening test position. The pulling system runs at constant speed while the dynamometer measures the force. Return the valve to the neutral position when the test is complete.
Closing test: move the pneumatic valve to the closing test position. The pushing system runs at constant speed while the dynamometer measures the force. Return the valve to the neutral position when the test is complete.
Product description
The STS-1 was designed to test the opening and closing forces of swing-top (mechanical-stopper) bottles. It features two precise force gauges, a semi-automatic cycle and an adjustable test position, and it accommodates bottles of different heights.

Frequently asked questions
What is the primary function of the STS-1 tester?
The STS-1 tests opening and closing forces on swing-top closures, using two precision dynamometers and a semi-automatic test cycle to evaluate cap mechanism durability.
What force ranges does the STS-1 support?
The STS-1 measures 0-50 / 0-100 / 0-200 N (specified at order), with an accuracy of 0.01 N (0-50 N), 0.05 N (0-100 N) or 0.1 N (0-200 N).
How is the STS-1 test cycle performed?
On the STS-1, the operator clamps the bottle and adjusts the closure, then runs separate opening and closing tests via pneumatic valve positions at constant speed, with the dynamometer measuring force in both directions.
