Testing the Burst Resistance of PET Bottles with the PBBT-2
Updated: Oct 12
How much internal pressure can a PET bottle withstand? The PBBT-2 PET Bottle Burst Tester by AT2E reproduces the pressurization a bottle undergoes during counter-pressure filling, and tests either its resilience under a given pressure or its burst resistance, up to 20 bar.
How the test works
After the test program is selected, the cycle starts automatically according to the settings. The touch screen displays the pressure in real time and records the maximum pressure and the burst pressure. Three test modes are available:
Fill ramp mode: simulates PET bottle filling lines. The bottle is pressurized rapidly to the preset initial pressure and held for a given time (for example 13 seconds), then the pressure keeps increasing at 0.7 bar/s (settable) until the bottle bursts or the maximum pressure or volume is reached. Preset parameters: initial pressure, hold time, pressure limit and ramp speed.
Burst mode: the bottle is pressurized rapidly to the preset initial pressure and held for a predefined period. Preset parameters: initial pressure, hold time and expansion limit.
Custom mode: the user creates a pressure curve by steps to meet particular control conditions. The corresponding curve is displayed on screen.
Product description
The PBBT-2 PET Bottle Burst Tester is specialized equipment for testing the internal pressure resistance of PET bottles. It is designed around the three test methods commonly used in the industry (fill ramp mode, burst mode and custom mode), and users choose the method that suits their requirements. By reproducing the pressurization, the PBBT-2 authentically simulates the pressure a PET bottle experiences during the counter-pressure filling process, which reflects the bottle's performance against instant pressure impact.
The optional water recycling system saves water and avoids unsteady tap-water pressure that could affect a test. An optional water temperature control unit allows tests to run with water at a controlled temperature. An additional booster can also be chosen, so that the PBBT-2 does not need a high-pressure source.

Frequently asked questions
What is the primary function of the PBBT-2 burst tester?
The PBBT-2 tests the internal pressure resistance of PET bottles. It simulates the counter-pressure filling process to evaluate burst strength and performance against instant pressure impact, from 0 to 20 bar.
Which test methods does the PBBT-2 support?
It offers the three test methods commonly used in the industry: fill ramp mode, burst mode and custom mode. Users select the method according to their requirements, to test resilience under a given pressure or to run a full burst test.
What sample capacity does the PBBT-2 handle?
The PBBT-2 tests bottles up to 3 L as standard (larger on order), with volume expansion measurement up to 3 L and a neck clamping range of 25-38 mm in diameter.
What does the PBBT-2 display and record during a test?
The pressurization cycle starts automatically according to preset parameters. The touch screen displays the pressure in real time and records both the maximum pressure and the burst pressure. The water temperature is monitored and recorded during the test, and up to 100 test results are stored.
