Stress Crack Testing of PET Bottle Bases with the SCT-D

3 min read

The SCT-D Stress Crack Tester by AT2E determines the stress crack resistance of blow-molded PET carbonated soft drink bottles. The bottles are pressurized while their base is exposed to an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution under a controlled environment, on up to 26 positions, to estimate their long term behavior.

How the test works

  • "SP" mode: the vessels are filled automatically with the solution, then the samples are pressurized according to the cycle setting.

  • "PS" mode: the samples are pressurized first and held for the preset time, then the vessels are filled automatically with the solution, and the pressurization continues according to the cycle setting.

  • Leak detection by position: when a bottle leaks, the light of its position turns green automatically and the system stops pressurizing that position. The operator can also stop a position by pressing its button if a tiny leakage is observed. The leak pressure and time are displayed below the button.

  • Results: after the test, the "SAVE/SEND" button generates a data table: positions that leaked are marked "NG" with the leakage pressure, the others "OK" with the predefined pressure. The table can be printed on the mini printer.

Product description

The AT2E SCT-D Stress Crack Tester is designed to test the internal stress in the bottle base and to determine the stress crack resistance of blow-molded PET carbonated soft drink bottles. It measures the propensity for base cracking upon exposure to an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution under a controlled environment, so as to estimate the long term behavior of the bottles. Its multi-position design, with each position controlled separately, makes testing more convenient and efficient.

Key features

  • Multi-position design (please consult AT2E for other numbers of positions)

  • Each position controlled separately: positions 1 to 26 enabled according to the test request

  • 2 test modes: "SP" and "PS"

  • Automation control for high accuracy and repeatability

  • Automatic pressure compensation during the test

  • Suitable for various bottle sizes

  • High quality stainless steel frame, safe and durable

  • Corrosion-resistant design

  • Anti-explosion, clear observation window

  • Various safety designs

Frequently asked questions

What is the primary function of the SCT-D Stress Crack Tester?

The SCT-D determines the stress crack resistance of blow-molded PET carbonated soft drink bottles: the bottles are pressurized while their base is exposed to a sodium hydroxide solution, to estimate their long term behavior.

How are the samples tested on the SCT-D?

The SCT-D runs two test modes. In "SP" mode, the vessels are filled with the solution first and the samples are then pressurized; in "PS" mode, the samples are pressurized and held first, then the vessels are filled. Each of the 26 positions is controlled separately and stops automatically when its bottle leaks.

What construction features does the SCT-D include?

The SCT-D has a high quality stainless steel frame, a corrosion-resistant design and an anti-explosion, clear observation window. The mini printer and the QualiCrack software are available as options.
